Darbo: a fruitful 2017 financial year

Tyrolean family firm enjoying growth in Austria and abroad

A. Darbo AG, Austria’s leading jam and honey provider, presented the figures for the 2017 financial year at the Annual General Meeting on 15 June 2018. The overall picture is extremely positive, with the Tyrolean family firm achieving a turnover of €138 million, up 3.8 per cent. Its export strategy also continues to prove extremely fruitful with the export ratio increasing further to 52.5 per cent from what was already a high base from previous years. Darbo remains out in front in Austria’s jam and fruit spread sector, now accounting for 59.2 per cent of the market.

“In the past year, the overall market for jams and fruit spreads has seen significant growth in Austria”, says a delighted Martin Darbo, Managing Director of A. Darbo AG, about the successful 2017 financial year. “Although most of Darbo’s growth came from exports – we also achieved an increase back home despite already enjoying a high market share. This is mainly thanks to the successful launch of the ‘Tagtraum’, a new dessert that can be found in the refrigerated section at food retailers.

With a market share of 59.2 per cent, Darbo remains the clear market leader for jams and fruit spreads in Austria. Darbo has also asserted its position as the Austrian market leader for honey, despite a minor decline in the market share to 32.8 per cent. Darbo has also slightly increased its share of the syrup market and holds the number two spot with 16.2 per cent (2016: 15.5 per cent) (Source: Nielsen Austria, in value terms, classic traditional food retailers excluding hard discounters).

Exports still on the rise
Darbo’s continuously increasing export ratio currently stands at an impressive 52.5 per cent (2016: 50.8 per cent). In Germany, Darbo’s most important export market, the company’s market share for jams and fruit spreads rose to 4.7 per cent (2016: 4 per cent). Sales to German restaurants and bakeries were also up significantly in 2017. The Italian, Russian and Chinese markets also performed extremely positively last year, while the USA suffered a decline.

Investments: storage capacity in Stans to be more than doubled

The number of employees also increased from 349 in the previous year to 375, making the Tyrolean family firm one of the most important employers in the region.
Building on the success of last year, Darbo will be focusing on further development and growth in 2018 – for example, a new fully automatic high-bay warehouse for finished products is currently being built at its Stans site. This will more than double the location’s storage capacity. The warehouse will be in operation as early as October 2018. “With further development and growth, we have an extremely positive outlook for the future. Nevertheless, procuring high-quality fruit is still our greatest challenge. Even during shortages, resorting to poorer quality fruit is not an option as quality and taste are non-negotiable for us” emphasises Martin Darbo.
